This unique peice was constructed from a string instrument salvaged mandolin from earlier years. The item was stripped down for the neck, the neck heal mount, tail peice, and the tuning machines.

The hand made solid tuning machines were disembled and cleaned for reuse on the neck stock. The broken ebony fret board was removed and a new purple heart fret board was applied. The Neck heal mount was laminated into the Navarro box with stilts ranging from the butt of the heal mount to the tail of the box where the pressure of the 8 strings weighs the most.

This, LBJ believed to stregthen the box for longivity. Once the box was sealed together, it is very crisp sounding without having sound holes routed out yet. The tailpeice, made of typical steal will be brazed with brass and polished to follow the brass look of the instrument. A brass/purple heart bridge will be fabricated, including a brass string nut.

All of the cigar box guitars made at BSG are built by the new BSG workshop luthiers and retain their own individual character and sound quality;  made by hand in our small workshop in The Finger Lakes Region in Upstate New York.

Several string typed instruments are fabricated and repaired in the BSG Workshop from 4 string tenor cigar box guitars to cigar box mandolin's. Bridges, string nuts, tuning machines, head stock/neck design, tail pieces and more have been hand fabricated also in the BSG Workshop, there is no instrument challenge to large in this workshop!

You can have your own BSG cigar box string instrument by ordering a custom or pre-defined model using the ordering link above OR entering into one of the raffles posted here through each year.

Visit this web site again soon to view all of the ongoing cigar box string instrument projects, and intrument repair/fabrication we are continually working on, to be posted right here at BubbaSmokinGuitars.com.

punch lap
Hand made round body box from spalted maple work shop scraps. This guitar was fabricated from a six string neck that was prepared for a cigar box guitar, but once this box was built on a whim, it was decided to use the curly maple neck with truss-rod in this spalted maple box built here in the BSG Workshop. The guitar went through several revisions and still is in need of a re-fret, but is frequently played in the workshop until one day, when we have that "free" time, it gains a new fret job.

Prior to this look, the guitar was completed with complications as YinYang with a face stain job that displayed the yin-yang, with the two small sound holes as part of the visual yin-yang appearance. It was then transformed from the image below into the images to the right.
